On behalf of the citizens of Creston, I am pleased to welcome RAGBRAI back to Creston and to Union County, Iowa. Nineteen years is way too long between visits.
Creston began as a railroad town, built on the summit of the southern Iowa’s high prairie, where the B & M survey crews pitched camp one night in 1868. This “Crest” was the high point between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The community that quickly grew on this crest was aptly names Creston.
The Restored Depot in Uptown Creston, takes you back to days gone by. The community, of almost 8000 people, and growing, has moved far beyond an agricultural and railroad town. Today Creston serves the regional center for business, education, medicine, industry and recreation for a large portion of south central and southwest Iowa. We are the largest community in SW Iowa behind only Des Moines and Council Bluffs. Creston is the county seat of Union County.
It is my hope that you will find Creston a great stop on your RAGBRAI journey.
Again, I welcome you to our great community. The citizens of Creston are proud of their community and look forward to sharing it with you.
~ Gary Lybarger, Creston Mayor
